Cubic Sensor & Instrument Co., Ltd, , in partnership with Innovaer Technologies, is pleased to announce that the Dual Channel NDIR AM4205, AM4203, & AM4203DR for A2L & A3L refrigeration gas leak detection sensing has been certified to UL 60335-2-40 and IEC 60335-2-40 for detection of R32, R454B and R290 in HVAC/R applications.

This is a critical milestone in supporting the HVAC/R industry as our Industry partners begin migrating to refrigerant blends with a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP). UL and IEC recognition of these critical components will allow our partners to streamline the design and manufacturing processes for the newly required A2L & A3L leak detection systems.

Carbon Monoxide Detection in Focus

As people continue to spend the majority of their day in enclosed spaces, the increased exposure risk to inhaled air pollutants has become a major topic of discussion in the HVAC/R and building management markets.

One of the most common inhaled indoor air pollutants is Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and toxic gas. Low concentration exposure of Carbon Monoxide can lead to fatigue or chest pains. Conversely, exposure to high concentrations can lead to impaired vision, dizziness, confusion or nausea – and potentially lead to death of an occupant in an enclosed space. Because of the heightened awareness associated with Carbon Monoxide and the associated health impacts, there are many companies innovating in the Carbon Monoxide detection space.

CPSC Proposed Rule for CO Monitoring in Residential Furnaces & Boilers

The U. S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission has been working hard to determine the impact of residential gas-fired furnaces, boilers, wall furnaces, and floor furnaces on the levels of Carbon Monoxide found in homes.

As of today, the CPSC has published a proposed rule that would require real-time monitoring of Carbon Monoxide levels within these residential appliances. The goal of which is to ensure our homes are not subject to dangerous increases in Carbon Monoxide. This proposed rule would require all HVAC/R OEMs, Integrators, and Automation providers to develop a Carbon Monoxide sensor that can withstand the harsh environments of residential furnaces and boilers.

Innovaer Technologies has already begun work for new innovative sensors that are designed specifically for this application. We are in the later stages of developing a Carbon Monoxide measurement platform that would be able to withstand the elevated temperatures, the aggressive temperature cycling found in this application, as well as the measurement range and accuracy required the by CPSC.

Section 6.2.6.1.3.4 of ASHRAE 62.1 Addendum ab states that CO2 sensors shall be certified by the manufacturer to be accurate within +/-75ppm at concentrations of 600, 1000, and 2500ppm when measured at seal level at 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 Addendum ab Establishes CO2 Maximums in Occupied Spaces

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 has long been the “go to” for specifying minimum ventilation rates and establishing guidelines for indoor air quality in Commercial HVAC applications.

As demand control ventilation applications (DCV) become ubiquitous in the Commercial HVAC market, so has real-time CO2 monitoring. Real-time CO2 monitoring is a known way to determine, not only fresh air rates in a space, but also occupancy within a space. The main challenge with AHSRAE 62.1-2022 is that there was no standardization or guidelines for Engineers, Design Professionals or Building Owners to follow when determining how to deploy real-time CO2 monitoring for DCV.

Addendum ab to ASHRAE 62.1-2022 addresses this challenge through the addition of standard differential CO2 concentration limits above ambient (400ppm) specifically for use with CO2 DCV systems specific to the type of Occupancy Category.

Table 6.1 (Page 5) establishes this maximum CO2 threshold above ambient for specific Occupancy Categories. For example, a classroom with students aged 5-8 would have a maximum CO2 threshold of 1000ppm (400ppm ambient + 600ppm CO2 above ambient).

Addendum ab also establishes accuracy requirements for CO2 sensors used in DCV applications.
